When Stone meets colour....

My travel and personal time is being consumed by a Leica M8 currently which was an inspirational moment from a friend of mine.It's manual, its simple and takes me back to quiet times where you have to work everything out and use your feet to zoom.

Don't get me wrong it cannot do the job of my Nikon's at Weddings but it's a nice tool to kick back and see the world again without needing to carry a small factory.

Well around 1000 actuations down and still a few to go. I makes me think of my photojournalist hero and inspiration - Henri Cartier-Bresson

An Amazing moment that can move you....

This weekend I once again had the pleasure of shooting a beautiful Wedding and whilst I don't always have the time to share as many images as I would like these days, I wanted to drop this one in as I was moved by a very serene moment of peace during the ceremony in the temple. I was shooting B&W to capture the emotion and while many images in Asian Weddings should remain colour, I thought this moment deserved the isolation that is offered by B&W.

Today I became a Tea connoisseur ....

When you are in London get yourself to Soho, Berwick Street or Camden Lock, Yum Chaa is the Tea Nirvana. I grabbed some shots while enjoying a cuppa. How British. !!! with and Asian slant.

My favourite was Adventure! but Black Tea, Red Tea, White Tea and loads I never saw try them all. !!!

Anyway all my shoots will now start there. Starbucks you are so yesterday.!!

I even got to work WIFI charge free with my cuppa !!

My Actor Private Project continues....

A good friend of mine and investor in the Movie Industry, Mike Hetherington provided me with a great chance last night to see another funny, gore riddled movie in the sick but comical genre.

We went to the film premiere for DOGHOUSE featuring one of my favourite new british gangster actors Danny Dyer. So a chance to have a mingle and a chat was great. Me and Danny below, the blond artist in the back ground is the Director Jake West ( Big Horror man)

The film was actually quite fun. Really great start, all the elements you want in the genre, probably could have finished 5 minutes earlier, but always happy to hear Danny's one liners.

We ended up at the Penthouse in Leicester Square and managed to take the little camera along for a nice evening shot across London. Hopefully you can see the London Eye, Big Ben amongst others.

Thanks to Mike, and hopefully a couple more shots in line for the Actor project.

I was asked to speak at the London Nikon User Group

With my continued blogging focus this month I wanted to thank Michael Eleftheriades from the London Nikon User Group for inviting me to speak to the Nikon members on my style and focus on Wedding Photography.

It was a great evening and a number of Pro's gave me some great and positive comments about how I was able to influence and impart new ideas. The evening was to motivate and stimulate discussions around the changing environment that is Wedding Photography.

In truth I enjoyed the stage and although I prefer working and doing the feedback from peers was a great feeling and assurance that m passion for all things photographic was not mis-guided or indeed wasted.

Thanks Mike, I look forward to contributing where I can in the future.

Helping out a Friend

I have not been posting for a while with facebook, twitter, myspace, forums and Nikon User Groups I just dont know how people get the time to work. Bad boy I know.

So I decided to get back to it. Expect a splurge in the next few days.

I got a call from a mate of mine late Friday. What do you do ? Well with Camera in hand, a great venue, nice weather and CANES !!! Of course Stewart Randall Photography I will be there to do my thing !! The NEXT day.!

I know Stewart will be there for me should the need arise, best part is we had a real blast and I had no post processing to do !!! A weekend off.~!! yahoo.

I like nice surprising at Weddings and Canes were one I had not seen to date so thought I would share.

Stewart asked me not to post stuff but these two I could not resist. Sorry Stewart. Love to Jules and thanks for asking me I had fun being a second shooter, chilling and letting someone else direct for once. Call me anytime !

FILM PREMIERE.......

I rarely get star struck but this week I got invited to a film premiere from one of my brides and I had a great time mingling with a little camera paparazzi style. I say style only because i had fun getting some discrete images for the kick rather than any use. I was there to enjoy a great movie, very funny British comedy with a few twists and a great deal of big giggles, laugh out loud stuff. If you like British humour, can stand a little appropriate swearing and want to see a new wave of fun actors and actress' go check out the film.

The First SNOW's in 2 decades (well useful snow)

I decided to get out and be a little hardcore after the first few images of the morning. I have never woken up to 15 inches of snow, or a man skiing past my windows.

I then got all holga and arty and decided that the D3 needed to be set to SQUARE images and I went out and saw the world through a square window.

Now a 7 year old knows how to play in the snow and it brought the child out in many adults also.

2008 Was a Good Year for friends

The New Year has begun and sadly our news tells us that we open the year with yet another feud in the world and more people are dying, images of children being injured are just too much to bare so we question our role in this place and we hope that a higher power knows best for us all.

2009 has to bring hope and perhaps a stance against the world negativity towards our money markets, leaders , fanatics and general bad energy. I look

around and this year more than ever I am thankful for the people I have met and surrounded myself with in the last year.

I learnt a lot about friends in 2008, with only a few surprises. These people have inspired and given me great amusement, love, entertainment, help, caring, support, laughter and a desire to be greater in 2009 than in previous years.

Through my contact and enjoying the moments in my photography I have pushed the boundaries of creativity, technology and a general need to be better at the things I love doing I feel I have built upon my friendships and knowledge for the coming years.

How do you produce a list and order them without giving priority that would hurt or categorize ? Well it was simple, I do not have a list. I bundled them all in and each one deserves a comment for their contribution to me this year.

First I thank my family, no questions.

I have travelled and in those travels Ray Santana has been a sound board, a rock and a true friend with free advice and a general sense of giving and availability that has made me try things when others might not. Ray I love you and I love your rock, Anna. In those travels I have met Mike Colon. He has inspired me in many different ways and his thirst for life and for doing things first constantly keeps me thinking. Mike you are my bro !!! Thanks to your family for letting them give yourself.

I love to eat and last year I ate the finest Argentinean steak in Celebration. Orlando with Kevin Keelan and family. Kevin we have spoken little this year as our rota's have been hectic but I owe you now and you will collect.

We are nothing without help and Shirley Nicklin has had my back a lot this year from London to Stockholm, even when they would not let her in !!! Haha. Shirley I love your enthusiasm and ability to go the distance with me when I am insisting at midnight we do one more money shot. I will always help you were I can and thank you for your support. Travel with Claudia Barth this year saved me in the Germanic tongue and you get a spec

ial thank you for your help in Switzerland which was nothing more than fun. My other support and friend Rob Johnson had my back a few times this year, bro I will return the favour now you moved to Nikon in 2009.

To Sophie Griffith who I just resonate with and we have such fun at our shoots, I am glad your family has grown again this year now back to work as I am missing our gigs.!

My greatest critic and friend Luke Jennings part of Fingo, who keeps all around me beautiful and creative. He is always available when I have a question on any matter. I will always ask for your thoughts my friend, your response never fail me, once I can convince you. !!!

To my yoga teacher Scott Johnson, you keep me on the mat where ever I am, thank you my friend.

So as we head into 2009 I want to see the positive in all things, to inspire and be inspired to teach and learn from teaching and to again push the boundaries of what I love to do so that I can give a little part of myself to the world around me.

I take pictures as i believe "To see is to have been there, to remember is to have experienced."

My greatest moment of last year was when I laugh

ed so hard it hurt. Thank you to V & R for taking me to Rome. I will never forget this moment or this person. Sorry to all others that I shot this year but this story is legend.

Sweden in the Winter

We hoped for snow and the sun to set after 5pm alas no snow and no sun after 2.30pm. However, when the night comes and the light goes I suddenly see a new view through the lens and creativity all the way starts to ooze from the nikon d3.

My great thanks to Frida and John who are the loveliest nicest people and surrounded by good time and close friends made this Wedding a very personal and memorable one. A snap of the day is here or rather i should say night.

Also to my friend and reliable buddy Shirley Nicklin whose untiring approach keeps me going to the late hours and keeps me thinking of those extra shots. Thanks Shirley you go from strength to strength. x

I had a great chance to shoot a super couple this weekend. There love showed in every shot.

and I got a chance to be creative with a 1930's style light, thanks Guys you were fun and the images show.

Of course no Indian Wedding is complete without the dancing this time some real Bollywood style was provided by the amazing Rakhi & Amit , I was caught between shooting and watching.

I got interviewed

I got interviewed, and it was kinda funny turning the mirror on oneself.

Tiffany from Grant Riley Weddings is a wonderfully creative planner who has chosen to focus on Vintage Weddings an she puts together beautiful packages for her clients where detail and authenticity is not a luxury but an overwhelming desire.

I did a shoot with Tiffany when she first started out and I wish her every success as she is passionate about what she does and it comes out the minute you meet her.

Japan

I had the great pleasure of a few days and nights in Japan last week. A country where the extremes of preserving the old and craving the new is taken to extremes and while Japan's culture remains part of it's DNA then this is one of the greatest countries on Earth. I have been there a few times now and each time I love the place more and get to see a different part and side. The business world, the food, the images, the people, the language nothing stands still 24/7.

Where have I been, and with who....... ?

I have been to an amazing Wedding in Italy with one of my best friends and two of the US's best know celeb photographers. !!

Reason, well safety in numbers and success comes from surrounding yourself in realiable, trustworthy friends.

We worked hard and late, but boy did we have fun and got some quality time to persue a dream of ours in Florence itself.

All this before the Wedding !

First we needed cars, Italian in style and size to ensure we zipped around the towns

We drove to the most amazing venue and checked in.......... wine, olives, grapes, cypress conifers

Tuscan terracotta walls......

Our passion apart from Nikon and Apple is PANERAI, the Italian watch maker. History, style, Unique movements and limited watch productions make this almost a cult. Guess which watch is whose ??...

Which led us to our dream location, the PANERAI original store from 1890 and the Museum integrated into the store where every watch since 1936 is displayed. Awesome and the give- aways were well worth the trip.

I have limited ability to show the party and Wedding shots but just as a small sampler this is a fountain of Vodka in the courtyard. !!! Check out Ray Santana , Mike Colon and Bob Davis blogs for more fun imagery and some approved shots.

In the making for sometime, prophotohub.com has been the brain child of experience, desire and need whilst plugging a hole for photographers who focus on the wedding industry and do not have time to run around different sites/forums/blogs and keep up with the latest and greatest.
Run by Ray Santana, a friend of mine, i am happy to shamelessly plug this site as a great resource as I know Ray has been passionate about this for some time and I am glad it has come together. Poacher turned Game keeper

A big hug and kiss to a friend of mine who has assisted me a few times now. She got married a few weeks ago and gave me the honor of recording the day. A beautiful person as well as bride and when she put the dress on, I kinda didn't recognise her.

Well the funniest piece to me was she admitted how strange it was to be that side of the camera, especially with me this side.

Anyhow it was great. Claudia and Mark you guys were brilliant and so in love it was lovely to be there and I know they won't mind me sharing that beautiful dress and the great location of Ottley Hall in Suffolk. x x

Well I was there !! 2008

His last Concert ever and the Nikon D40 was with me. 3200 ISO baby, I thought this had photographic relevance as you cannot have the D3 with you everywhere. Also the 18-55 lens was not too bad.!

George is not a big fan of the relationship the UK politicians had with the most powerful man in the free world. He made it clear if you are into that sort of thing. But it was funny.

And although he was close the D40 performed well for a 6 meg pixels baby.

Raj & Neetu get married

This was a Wedding full of details and fun and friends. I loved shooting this Wedding I got back with Anup Parmar and Rakesh and we had a great time.

Anup trying to convince me his toy is bigger and does more things than mine.

The details were staggering.

When the mums are having this much fun you know there is nothing else to do but smile and keeping pressing that trigger.

An Appology.

Just wanted to reach out to my friends and family to apologize for not being around last couple of weeks. I have been so so so busy with work that I did not have time to take a breath.

This weekend gave me thinking and breathing time as I had no sleep shooting the most amazing Wedding in a dream location. It was hard, long hours and so much fun. Claudia Barth came with me for the extra angles and help me over come my fear of heights and my lack of native tongue. We did it and I will play catch up this week with missing blog chronology. I had a great time guys !

What happens when you take one of the top venues in the UK like Highclere Castle (Michelle your team were brilliant).

Combine it with a couple who just laugh all the time and a Wedding day 18 months in the planning.

You get a recipe for one of my favourite weekends a person could spend in the company of so hardened party goers. It was a full day which rocked into the night with fireworks and all the trimings.

The story I wanted to share on this little blog is one that left me laughing for quite a few frames. Positioning the Bride and Groom out of sight of the camera I asked the B&G to walk together into the scene, in love and embraced going for the ultimate architectural love shot !!!

What I got was my own comedy show, a very British gag using the traffic cones but it did set the scene for most of the day. Guys you made me hoot all day, thanks. I love the images I hope you do too. I think we captured the soul of your Wedding.

At the Big Weddings - Nikon Rules

Sadly I cannot show you watchers too much of this Wedding but I must share a great moment that I can gloat on when it comes to Nikon.

My friend Sophie Griffiths and I enjoyed so much of last weekend.

When the Groom and his party arrive by Helicopter, to transfer to a seriously lovely Caddy.....

..and the Dress is designed and made by Suzie Turner you know you are in for a great day.

But then in the heat of the day I managed to set aside some time to chat to guests and when the Celebs come out to shoot they shoot Nikon baby !!!! Kelly and I were reviewing her shots and I wanted to extend a quick thanks to her for saying I could share the image. I love being a Nikon Pro. I know where to go for a second shooter, she bagged some good shots. Model turned photographer I am thinking.

I must also say thank you to David Longbottom for laughing so hard and for so long when I fell into the river at the end of the day. But that is a completely separate story. !!!

Now that is a Venue !
coupled with an amazing Bride & Groom who were a pleasure to photograph makes this work sometimes special. M & S you guys were brilliant and everything was planned down to the smallest details which I hope was captured. Hatfield House is one of the venues that probably realises it has so much potential, but does it in such a subdued style, it's almost too discrete.
I had an amazing day and my team ate and drank well. I cannot wait to see you both back after honeymoon, rested and ready for the photos.

Cars and History and traditions and tears and beauty and flowers and music. All in a day. England is the best when the weather shines.

Just too much fun can never be had.
A big shout out to a bride and groom who provided a great party and an amazing venue for 320 guests. R & N were just awesome and such fun to be around the whole day. I also hooked up with a great videographer Anup Parmar who was just a complete partner all day I will be fortunate to work with him again in a couple of weeks. Lets wear black again and stalk the crowds like panthers !!!!

Maz of Leicester has put on a unique gathering of Italian photographers to offer their experience, opinions and general panache. All hosted at the International Institute of Imaging Excellence in Leicester.

If you have the time, knowledge and training are critical. Their style has been developed to suit their personalities and markets. Regardless of your experience, those who learn fastest will remain longest. !!!

See Rome and Fall in Love !

The Wedding scene is in full swing and this one was a beautiful Destination event with probably the most stunning location I have ever seen and a great set of people who went out of their way to ensure I was fed and watered to the highest standards. Well of course they are Italians !!!! We do that ! Thank you guys you looked after me well.

I cannot publish the details but as a sample set to get an idea of scale, here goes. I have some other stuff later in the year in Italy so for those going, this should wet your appetites. Salute !

An Evening with the King.......

Last week a good friend of mine Sophia and I went to shoot an evening event based on the 50's.The decor was spot on, Diner's, Waitress' Caddy's. But the best surprise came when the greatest Elvis impersonator came on stage to entertain. I was torn between shooting and enjoying the music and class act.

I could not publish the extra cool stuff due to the guest list but this guy was amazing, looked, sounded and moved like our hero !!! And all the way from the US.

So I have been humming Suspicious Minds, Jailhouse Rock and Love me tender ever since !!

Destination Wedding

Once again I have the great honour of shooting with one of my favourites and in Miami as well. 4437 miles, 8 hrs 20 minutes later and I get to see the Biltmore for the first time. What a great venue and probably one of the best in Florida.

The families were just lovely, the details unfortunately have to remain private for reasons that will come clear in due course but wow what a place and what a lovely Wedding.

NATURE let me off today !
Today I saw God and he was crying hard. ! I have never been hit by a wind and rain that has pushed a family salon car sideways until today at 5.00pm driving in Florida. I took the image out of the car door as the storm was rising and then 3 minutes later bam!!!

On my way back to my hotel I saw 6 fire trucks, 4 ambulances and countless State Troopers on a stretch of 10 miles of freeway. Thank god I know how to drive in the rain, well the UK is good for some stuff right.

I Love Miami !

My friend Ray Santana lives there and when one of his oldest and dearest friends got married this weekend I was honoured to both shoot and help out while I was on holiday in North Florida. The lighting in the church and the reception venue was designed for the Nikon D3. Ray you are a star and my warmest thoughts go out to R & V who are the loveliest people you could meet and want to know.

Today I met one of the coolest additions to the Wedding industry that I have met in a long time. Damo Cross owns a Super 8 cine film company that makes Wedding Films like they should be made. An artistic record of the day, use of the film format and all its great colours, grain and flexibility brings the vintage beauty of the format and a unique presentation.

This weekend I had the great honour of shooting one of the coolest couples I have met. As well as being lovely people they just wanted to enjoy their Wedding Day to the full and that included pictures, venues, food, laughter, tube rides, industrial areas, bridges and that was just between the ceremony and the reception.

M & A, you were brilliant and I hope the images reflect the fun myself and my friend Zimbo had with you this weekend. Thanks Zimbo for you help. Just a few samples I pulled together straight out of the Nikon D3, no post, not straightening, nothing all jpgs. Wow that camera still amazes me even after 2 months.

End of Year Greetings:

Well another year is closing and this one has been one of the best ever photographically. I have met some amazing people on my journey, been helped by some of the best in the business and been inspired from some unusual places that would not always be a first port of call when creative juices are drying up.

Those that know me, know that this year I focused down on Wedding Photography. My passion for people and capturing or creating the moments that are reflected in one of the most memorable days of a person's life suddenly gave me a new energy to grab the camera and click.

I leave the year having met some amazing couples, many of who jumped at the idea of adding a lifestyle and fashion slant to their weddings, others had to be a little coached and came out sometimes as the ones who surprised themselves the most.

On the general subject of photography buddies and friends. This is in one way a highly complex and in another very simple statement. You cannot do without them, and the ones you have you should always respect and share as much as you can with. The new world currency is information and your pool of knowledge extends the more you share it.

I have too many thank you hugs to dish out this year but I wanted to document a few.

The family goes without saying.

This blog is about photography and my associates. I would like to say in no particular order and it is for the most part, however one gentleman sticks out as a guide, a friend and a sound board for me in recent times, Ray Santana or more affectionately UncleRay. Ray has been a mentor and I cannot help myself but thank his wife for letting us chat when ever I need inspiration or affirmation of direction and creativity. Ray thanks for helping me spend a huge amount of money this year and making me a better photographer with each dollar spent. I value our chats and our candid view of life.

Thanks also go out to Zimbo, Claudia Barth and Sophie Griffiths who have been there in the UK to drag me along for great photo shoots and help me out.

Thanks to Kevin Keelan and his lighting workshop, Kevin showed me a light technique with flash guns that gave me the confidence to seek out the light in the most complex of situations.

My Web Designer Luke who is my sanity check and one of my greatest critiques.

Alex Rodriguez, John Clements and Oz Kharawala for their support. Nikon Pro Group for helping me spend the money UncleRay did not manage to get his hands on.

Finally and by no means least a thanks to someone who started this whole thing off in my head a long while back, Mike Colon, a Nikon Legend behind the lens. I met all of the above people through this process and the journey this year would never have happened without the chance meeting.

Last Wedding of the year and boy what a great surprise. A beautiful Winter Wedding with all the orange warm colours that Britain can offer this time of year. Always nice to meet a great couple who love to be photographed. The album will be stunning as it captures all the warmth of the mansion at Xmas, something to treasure for ever. I like winter Weddings and the Sun peeping out made it seem all the more rewarding.

I love my D3, there has been lots of talk about its usefulness above certain ISO's but here is why I love this camera like a small child.

2000 ISO 1/40 f2.8 tree lights

Its Great to be a Nikon Professional Member:
Well today I got a call from Nikon, they said where do you want your D3 sent to ?

UncleRay and UncleMike made me see the light and as a Nikon pro with a vision to becoming a Nikon Legend Behind the Lens I just felt it rude not to collect one of the first cameras into this country.

I cannot wait to get this sweet camera and from some of the Wedding images I have seen already will make it a pleasure to hit the high dynamic ranged, hideous light situations and sail through. Xmas come early!

I NEED TO GO SEE Unlcemike.

I cannot get enough of these cool US photographers. Just back from hanging with Ray Santana ( the finest gent Miami can offer up) and I saw Mike Colon's latest workshop advertised down in the OC of California. It's booking fast but as an experience and having a chance to spend quality time with one of America's most contemporary photographers I could not recommend it more.

Extra cash left over for the new year, I would recommend a European posse get over to CA and take this workshop. Mike is a great visionary and unusually for this industry is happy to give up the secret sauces and share his journey to success with a lot of guidance and ideas.

The Colon Experience VIII - 4 day Intensive (Jan 21-24, 2008)

I am so close to booking, one more call from UncleRay and I will not be able to stand their Jedi powers any longer. Right i'm off the phone is ringing. !!!

I Love Miami:
Its all in the planning, and when I got invited to shoot a wedding in Miami with the great Ray Santana it was like returning home. Ray is a great friend and person and we had such a blast and the shots we got were just drop dead. I knew the Wedding was unusual because it was identical twins getting married at the same time. Beautiful people and the latino dancing was just great, a pleasure to photograph and be part of so thanks Ray. The Twins were beautiful and just great fun to work with.

Another cool Miami photographer was Alex Rodriguez who came on the shoot and we had extra fun sharing gear, CF cards and food. Alex is as big a nikon baby as Ray and I so he rocks !!! .

Now the apres Wedding is almost as important on these destination Weddings, getting over jet lag the one cure I know is good Italian food and Ray took us to Caffe Abbracci. If you are in the area our dish is Black Ravioli filled with Lobster !!!!! Thanks to Ray and his wife for taking me back to home cooking, southern Italy style.

I shot a lovely, very refined, exquisite Wedding this weekend. The theme was all about their passions, each other, food, drink and of course vintage cars. For those that know me I am always looking to add that bit extra and do some new cool shots for my Bride & Groom.

That little extra that gives a great surprise to the final album.

My good friend zimbo helped me out as I taught him how to hang out the side of a car doing 40 miles per hour to get the shot. Thanks for keeping the car straight Rob. Thanks to Pamela, Simon, Harriet and Toby for being great sports.

CSI MIAMI :
I am so excited and cannot wait to get on the plane. I'm off to Miami for my second wedding shoot there and it's gonna be so cool. CSI means Come Shoot Images right?Twins getting married at the same time and my great friend Ray Santana has done me the honour of inviting me to shoot with him and Alex Rodriguez. It will be a big Wedding with so much to capture.
Miami is like no other place, the beauty, the heat, the culture mash up if that was not enough, great places to get married and light that gives California a run for it's money.

The three of us will just have a blast the whole weekend, and i get to come home with the new Boda lens bag as well. Life is good.

I love High Society Gigs, so much fun and I really enjoy being challenged each year to get some more interesting angles and shots on the same theme, in extreme conditions of cold, darkness, dampness.

So when many of the 200 guests arrive by helicopters

Get entertained by traveling musicians

Sit around a huge bonfire, that warms your face from 50 feet,

get to watch 30 minutes of the most amazing fireworks

finally get entertained by a cool live band until the early hours

oh boy I knew the iPhone was good but it makes it all that much sweeter when the vodafone sales rep spent 10 minutes telling me how crap it was compared to the new Nokia N95 thing. I said "but it does look good though" and it works even better. Perfect data email contacts one touch sync I love apple they do it right. Let's face it for a photag its all in the look and how it makes u feel.

So now I will be connected at all time and got some great news today on the iphone, looks like I will get published in the new year so have to update the site as I start to get some artwork splashes.

1930's:
Would you get married in the 1930's. I was hired by Grant-Riley Weddings to shot some promo shots for their up and coming exhibitions and art work. Tiffany is building her planning business and hopes to focus on period weddings moving forward. The models, make up and runners all turned up for a day of running around at the beautiful Petersham Hotel where Tiffany re-created the 1930's.

My buddy Zimbo helped out and got some rocking shots as we worked the angles together with MultiBlitz and Elinchrom lights. Fun stuff and I would do it all again. The model Annette was just stunning and fitted into the period with great grace and ease. Check out some style and shots of an era gone by.

So as a tribute to my good friend Ray Santana I had to put together a short film. He makes it look so easy, and the MAC is just sweet for all things media. I tried and well you can judge but we had fun shooting once Rob the runner worked out how to use the camera.

NIKON D3 BABY:
The future is bright and has a yellow sun from the East and its name is Nikon. Last night I got a very privileged invite to look, play and shoot with the new Nikon D3. I was ready to sign.
This is by no means a review, there are enough of those, this is just a few samples and 1:1 crops of the potential for this camera and how Nikon is going to sweap across Europe leaving Canon feeling a little low.
The camera is a little heavier than the D2x, but my word what a re-design of an all ready ergonomic master piece. The view finder is as bright and large as a shop window and all the buttons and menus are just placed so well, the transition from cameras was simple.
I only got to play for around 10 minutes as the room was full of geeks like myself eager to understand more, but in fairness all i wanted to know was what could it shoot at 3200 - 25k ISO. And boy did i find out. The room was a dark hall with side lights and little else, full of people and little room to swing a cat or camera.

The lens was the new 14-24mm and it was a beast. Nano crystals, and Nikon's claim it out performs a prime lens was bold but interestingly confident.

The twin card slots is a new concept for Nikon shooters but so well executed. I shoved my 2 gig into slot 2 and passed the camera onto the next man so i got some extra stuff as a bonus.

Now lets get things straight this was no photo shot, more a paparazzi expolsion of shutter speeds and high ISO. The content was simple and the angles did not matter, the goal get some RAW files to convert and peruse at 100% on screen.
Below is the story so far.
First shot data is 6400 ISO, 1/250, f4
100 crop of the image after viewing actual pixels
100 crop of the image after viewing actual pixels
6400ISO, f4, 1/60th this has been croped about 25% already. and the subsequent image is 1:1 Crop.

Finally the 25600 ISO , f5.6, 1/100, which is the had to get A shot, but it worked.

The last one is a 1:1 crop of a 1600 ISO, 1/20th. f2.8 image not traditional a Nikon strength area but check out the detail and noiseless crop.

Hope you enjoy and get as excited as the room was about the beast.
Final caveat, none of the images have been manipulated in anyway. Straight from camera into Nikon ViewNX (only product that can process D3 RAW) output to a 16 bit TIFF and passed to Aperture for 640x480 processing. Role on end of November - 30th to be exact. I got my NPS number today so I jumped the queue somewhere in the world.

A few days after the Lifestyle shoot I got to see the bride and Groom on their big day, and wow what a big day. Sikh Weddings are like shooting a news real, something always going on somewhere and you are in the thick of it. I had a great time and so many people where on hand to help. I was there to shoot the events as they unrolled, catching the Bride & Groom as natural as can be.
It was full of colour, light, beauty, music, food. A great day. Thanks. Heres a few of the moments.

Now this is a cool couple. I met them this evening and we fired off a few test shots in readiness for the Wedding this weekend. They booked me at short notice and boy would I have liked to spend more time with them. The Wedding I know will be totally awesome. Sometimes you meet people who just love to be themselves and take brilliant natural images. Guys it was both fun and enjoyable to shoot this evening, thanks.

I managed to continue with my love of the coffee culture developing over here.
From there we went into a really relaxed mode and a chai tea latte always helps to warm the heart as winter approaches.

So a busy weekend, 2 lifestyle shoots and a meeting with a great couple who will be getting married at Hatfield House next year.

First to Pamela, Simon and family. A fun hour of just causal shots. Sometimes its just nice to hang out and meet people, shoot a few casual shots and talk about their Wedding that is looming.
Thanks guys, the kids made it easy and we will all have a great time next month.
next I got to shoot a couple of kids I know really well and they were just fun and reminded me of how much life really is just all about returning to our youth and letting it all happen around you.

Then I met Mark & Stacey who are getting married here and wow what a venue, can't wait for to talk to them about all the shots we are gonna be able to get.

My journey down the West Coast is moving to a close so i thought I would stick a few great moments to track my progress to a great finale coming later in the week. 6.30 am as sun comes up in Monterey, the sand gets everywhere making it look like morning frost or snow.
Big Sur then looms out of the ocean at around 11.30am in readiness for lunch and some breath taking views. The bridges look hairy but actually its a nice drive if taken slowly.

Rounding a corner, 10 birds are circling ahead, turns out to be 30% of the Worlds population of the now very rare California Condor. And all of them were right in front of the Nikon baby 70-200VR, couldnt resist. These things are huge is all i can say and i think they were more curious of the watchers than being watched.
Towards the south there lies a bunch of the laziest critters I have every seen, Elephant Bull Seals sun bathing and snoring.
Down to Santa Barbara for the next day, and an early morning visit to the Pier picks out the great colours and the sea fog hanging around. Here I captured the shot of the week below and just loved the sea air so close and so early. Never catch any fish though.
Finally I get to LA and meet actors, well the sushi chef had been in Black Rain and the Manager of the restaurant was in most movies from Oceans 11 to Swat and Miami Vice. Everyone's an actor in LA, everyone. I was content with waking the next day, opening the shades and seeing the morning sun making the skyline a breath taking scence, even for LA.
As I move south to the OC and La Jolla I get to see southern CA and its brilliance. More installments to come I am sure.

What do you get if you take one of the River Thames most painted points made famous by Turner, an obsession with rubber ducks and Tarantino, pleasures from the finer things in life and a mix of lovely friendly people all out to have a great time and enjoy life. The answer is Nicki & Rogers Wedding.

Reservoir Ducks, superb cuisine, an amazing venue at the Petersham Hotel and once again I get caught on Camera holding my favourite Nikon baby.

You know sometimes you meet the nicest people and they leave a lovely impression on you and that inspires you to want to do more. Nicki & Roger are getting married next week and they have had a roller coaster to get there that sometimes is the Wedding industry and all associated.
I have the great honour of recording the event and I am so looking forward to it. This was some of the fun we had at the lifestyle so the Wedding will be a great hoot. Richmond in London was the location and just a beautiful oasis of green and water nestled into the suburb. Good luck guys it will be great.

This was an amazingly private Wedding and with good cause. I will be able to put up some real images in a few months but in the mean time I must let you know it was unreal. 500 people, 3 ceremonies, Punjabi taxis, Stallions, Dancing, beauty of the East, Helicopters transporting Rabi's to and from the country venue. A story of love from a distance, two cultures coming together, ornate decor, Asia tents, Frank Sinatra songs, a string quartet and some india music. A an incredible fireworks display to finish.

Well I wish every Wedding was this colourful and fun packed. 3 photographers worked hard capturing around 6000 images. Now that is going to be a lot of sorting.

Back from Vegas and processed a few more images which I wanted to share with a few people who asked. 2 Days in the Valley, 110 degrees and not enough cold water to bath in, well not until we got back to the strip.
My thanks to Ron, Denise and Simon for keeping me entertained and showing a keeness to inspire me to find more angles and shots than I usually do on my travels.
Interestingly with the 300 or so Weddings per month going on in Vegas each time I saw a bride I was desperate to offer my services to shoot funky stuff in the desert. Alas I feel I would have been considered wierd, even in Vegas. Well here's some of my favs.

Every so often a friend will call up and say can you give me a hand. Turns out this time it proved that I could not only help out a friend but gave him a chance to enjoy himself and myself at the same time. It was Rob's sister's Wedding and he agreed he would never shoot a family Wedding again. So much inner conflict, wanting to enjoy yourself and needing to work.
I am so glad I went, enabled my to test myself under pressure, no pre-spec of the venues and not knowing anyone.
Heather and Luke the couple were great and let me do my thing after I persuaded the Vicar to let me shoot through the service and set some guns up for the exit. Then we got to the Reception and the shoot was on. Inside a Submarine !!!!

Heather was beautiful, Cameron Di-esk and with a church in the grounds of a ruined castle and the reception with the nautical theme, some great back grounds made me a landscape photographer again.

Rob and I got a chance for a few giggles, a few shared moments and lots of shutter firing. Getting to the submarine was just great, cool light outside , no light inside.

Threw up some guns and a few wireless transmitters, a technique a friend of mine insisted I tried out and we nailed the shots.

A unique Wedding, unique challenges and some unique images, Rob thanks for the opportunity to help you and your lovely family out, I had a blast. Excuse the maritime pun.

Not everyday I get to play around inside a submarine from the 1950's, it was terrific and even
more intense for some one who is a little claustrophobic. Hey Uncleray always says, you gotta get the shoots T. So did I get 'em ?

Essential Wedding Preparation

I have just got back from a great workshop in Orlando with a great photographer who can manage and create interior light like no other I have met. He gave us the darkest of churches and made it look like an open air exchange of vows.
Kevin Keelan K2 workshops are a must for understanding light and positioning of light. I went hoping to learn a few tips and I cam back with a life long friend. Kevin and his family's welcomed me into the private dwellings and were just the best. Thank you Julie, Kevin you helped me want to be in Orlando more often.
I also met some great people from North Carolina to Indiana all who helped add to the richness of the 3 days.
I will post a few shots in the coming days, it was a giggle and we had some great food and coffee.

Just over a week away from jumping on a plane and hooking up with a great photographer and all round spot on chap Kevin Keelan, Orlando's premier photgrapher and Studio.

Kevin says he is going to be sharing information and droppping down information to a group of photags on everything flash and lowlight orientated. Kevin I cannot wait. It will be a blast, and am looking forward to the weather. It's just like the UK, storms clouds, humidity and rain. A prefect Summers day Wedding set up.

I met Kevin and Ray Santana a couple of years ago and both are great people who have time to share their experiences and work. A credit to the new breed of photgraphers.

I have processed the images now and must confess that I feel very honoured to have been invited to shoot with my favourite America Ray Santana on a very special Wedding on the exclusive Fischer Island. With very little sleep for three nights we shot continuously capturing moments where they were and making other moments. Ray I cannot thank you enough for the invite and I loved the Nikon boy link up. Also Kevin Meyers was great and I hope a life long friend in the making. We had a blast and we will do it again in Oregan sometime I know.
On to the images, Ray and Kevin have sampled a few so go check things out, here are a few I picked out as memories of the occasion and a testiment to the capabilities of Nikon at 400-800 ISO for the techies amongst us.Miami never sleeps and neither did we but the adrenalin the fun and the friends made it all one of the best Weddings I have every attended and worked on. So after the Wedding Shoot I had a chance to do the 4 great things everyone must do in Miami. I am sure there are many more things but with limited time and strength I chose these.

1. Suck it up with a friend in the Delano Hotel, take in the sights and have a coffee.

2. Check out the beach and all the associated fun,
humidity like storm clouds and extreme heat and of course the sun beds and the beautiful people spilling out of the Hotels to leather themselves. Perfect Sunday afternoon.

3. Enjoy the Art Deco which is not my favourite but in Miami it actually works. In fact anything else would just be wrong. Ocean Drive is the famous area along with the Versace palace, but alas Lincoln Av and Collins will hit the spot also.

4. Last of all get yourself down to Ocean Drive and check out the Havana style scenery. There are lots of things to see and check out the A -lister sitting in one of the cars, I will not spoil it for you.
Well thought I would post up while I continue to process some cool images from the big Wedding. I got some real moments during the days, tear, screams, laughter and singing. Saty tuned. Hope you liked Miami. x

Bienvenudo a Miami !!!
I've landed and I am a little tired. Virgin were superb, gave me extra leg room and treated me perfectly, I watched Zodiac (highly recommended) check it out the acting and the lighting is awesome.

So I hooked up with one of Miami's greats Ray Santana and a new photographer from Oregan Kevin Meyers to shoot probably one of the coolest Weddings so far. If you know Fisher Island, then I need to say no more. If you don't Google it !! Plots are exclusive and start at $2 million dollars.

What a place and what a great bunch of people, 3 days of shooting and some really unique entertainment. At one point it felt like the set of a bond film. Between us we seem to have captured the moments and the essence of the Wedding. The couple were awesome and just lovely people. How's this 007. ??

I am exhausted but on a real high from the whole weekend. A big thanks to Ray for hooking us up. We sure had some giggles the three of us. We did a real stretch and got some unique imagery. Double Agents to the end I will post some more once i get about a weeks worth of rest . I love you guys, see you again soon.

I am watching your blog Kevin, and Ray good luck with the processing, any help I am here for you bud.

Oh boy I had fun this weekend. A great couple that I took time to get to know as well as a photographer can and i envisaged them in a style of imagery that was complimentary to their personality and their home.

I hope they love the shots as I had great fun doing them and I love couples who just ooze in front of the camera. They have a beautiful connection which I hoped to capture and their love of art helped this go in a direction that for me worked.

They won a Lifestyle shoot and I am glad because they get married next year and it could not be a more suited couple who will just have the most fabulous day.

Dallas and Ian, thanks for a great and easy time guys, it was fun and I had fun processing the images as even I did not know what was coming. x x

As an Apple evangelist for the last 6 years this weekend I begrudgingly had to concede my 6 year old MAC Quicksilver had done its full tour of duty and needed to be upgraded. In this time I have had 3 PC's and yet the MAC has been faultless, undergone 3 major O/S upgrades and countless patches. Never a problem never a support call. That is a product and I am sad to see it sit at the side lines for now. Alas the King is dead.

All hail the new mahooley machine !!!! What a beast and the screen is staggeringly amazing. 30 inches and a second screen of 20 inches, takes 30 minutes to move the mouse from one side to the other. I love it. Fast zippy and lots of expandability which will keep this machine going for another 6 years I am sure. That is investment return in the true sense.

But most people dont realise the greatest piece of engineering. Connect the old one to the new one via Firewire and ZAP it all moves across seamlessly, and apart from a couple of products that need the keys re-entering the new machine looks just like the old one just prettier, faster, bigger and quieter.

Apple I salute you ! Thank you for allowing me to give you far too much money.

Every so often things conspire to bring together a perfect storm. This day was one such day. Two of the worlds great wedding photographers in one place. Two different styles both a huge influence to my photography and attitude in helping to provide the best service to a bride for a given price.
Joe Buissink famous for capturing the moment in B&W film and Yervant for creating the moment in digital.

So I had them for what felt like a whole day to myself and I asked lots of questions and furthered my technique and attitude to my photography. Yervant brought some real insights into the glamour of Wedding Photography and was very humble.

Joe was his usual creative self, always looking for the new moment to capture.

There are a couple of other greats I hope to meet in time, until then I allowed myself a little hero worship on the side. Nice Cheese !!!!
